VPN FAQ: Answers to Common Questions About VPNs

Short, honest answers to the questions we hear most about VPNs. For the basics, start with What is a VPN?
General
Do I need a VPN at home?
It is optional. A VPN hides your browsing from your internet provider, but most websites already use HTTPS. It is most useful on public Wi-Fi, when travelling, or on networks that restrict content.
Does a VPN make me anonymous?
No. It hides your IP address and encrypts traffic on the way to the VPN server, but accounts, cookies and browser fingerprinting can still identify you. No honest provider can promise “100% anonymity”.
Can my internet provider see that I use a VPN?
Usually yes — it can see that you are connected to a VPN server, but not the content or websites. Obfuscation features try to make VPN traffic look like regular HTTPS.
Will a VPN slow down my internet?
Some slowdown is normal. Choose a nearby server and a modern protocol like WireGuard for the best speed.
Privacy and trust
What does “no-logs” mean?
The provider says it does not store records of your online activity. Read the actual privacy policy — some services keep limited connection records — and look for recent independent audits by named firms.
Are free VPNs safe?
Free plans from established providers (such as Proton VPN Free or Windscribe Free) can be reasonable. Be cautious with unknown free apps: if you do not pay, ask how the service makes money.
VPN app or browser extension?
Extensions protect only the browser; apps protect the whole device. See Chrome VPN extension reviews.
Travel and restricted networks
Will a VPN work in China?
Some VPNs with obfuscation work at times, but none is guaranteed. Install before you travel and keep a backup. See Best VPN for China.
Is a VPN legal?
In most countries, including Japan and Taiwan, ordinary VPN use is legal. Some countries regulate or restrict VPNs, and mainland China requires cross-border VPN services to be approved. Check the rules where you are; we are not lawyers.

Prices
Why is the renewal price higher?
Most providers advertise a discounted first term and renew at a standard rate. Compare current offers on our VPN discounts page.
Can I get my money back?
Most major providers offer a refund window (often 14–30 days). Check the conditions, such as excluded payment methods.
