Chrome VPN Extension Reviews (2026): 5 Extensions Compared

Browser window with a protected shield icon illustrating VPN browser extensions

A VPN extension for Chrome is the quickest way to change your location or encrypt traffic in the browser — no admin rights and a one-click install. But most “VPN extensions” are really encrypted proxies: they protect only the browser, while other apps on your computer keep using your normal connection. Here we review five popular Chrome extensions and explain what each one actually protects.

Information checked: October 17, 2026. Extension features change frequently; check the provider’s page before relying on a feature.

Extension vs full VPN app

  • Extension: protects browser traffic only; quick to set up; useful at work or on shared computers where you cannot install apps.
  • Full app: protects the whole device (email clients, messengers, games, system updates), usually with a system-level kill switch and more protocols — including obfuscation for restricted networks.
  • Providers advise not to run the app and the extension at the same time, because they can interfere with each other.

Reviews

Proton VPN extension — best free choice

Since August 2024 the Proton VPN browser extension has been available to everyone on the Free plan. It works in Chrome and Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi) and in Firefox. Paid plans let you run the extension in several browsers, each connected to a different server. Proton says other apps on your device continue to use your normal connection.

NordVPN extension — most features

NordVPN’s extension is a proxy for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that secures browser traffic. It includes a browser-level kill switch, split tunneling for chosen websites, time and date spoofing to match the server, and protection against scam and phishing sites. Advanced options such as obfuscated servers and protocol choice are only in the full app.

Surfshark extension — CleanWeb ad blocking

Surfshark’s extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox secures browser traffic and includes CleanWeb ad blocking. It is included with a Surfshark subscription. If you want to run the app too, Surfshark suggests excluding the browser with its Bypasser feature.

Check Surfshark

ExpressVPN extension — two modes

In Remote Control Mode the extension controls the ExpressVPN desktop app, so the whole device is protected. In Proxy Mode it works without the app but encrypts only browser traffic; this is the only mode on Chromebook. Optional WebRTC blocking and location spoofing help prevent IP and location leaks.

Check ExpressVPN

Windscribe extension — generous free tier and privacy tools

Windscribe’s free plan gives 10 GB per month with an email address (2 GB without) and 10 free countries. The extension adds many privacy tools: WebRTC Slayer, Cookie Monster (deletes cookies when you close a tab), user-agent rotation and blockers for ads, trackers and malware. Pro costs $9 per month or $69 per year, or you can build a plan from $1 per location.

Check Windscribe

Which should you choose?

  • Free and trustworthy: Proton VPN or Windscribe.
  • Most features in the browser: NordVPN.
  • Ad blocking plus VPN: Surfshark.
  • Whole-device protection controlled from the browser: ExpressVPN in Remote Control Mode.
  • Restricted networks such as mainland China: extensions are usually not enough — use a full app with obfuscation. See Best VPN for China.

FAQ

Is a VPN extension as safe as a VPN app?

It protects less: only traffic from that browser. For full protection, use the app. Learn more in What is a VPN?

Are free VPN extensions safe?

Those from established providers with published policies and audits are a reasonable choice. Be careful with unknown free extensions — they may collect browsing data.
