Best Taiwan VPN 2026: 7 VPNs for a Taiwan IP Compared (Servers, Prices, Devices, Reviews)

VPN Guard Dog shield with TW label for the best VPN for Taiwan guide

Looking for the best Taiwan VPN? Whether you are in Taiwan and want to secure public Wi-Fi, or abroad and need a Taiwan IP address for services that only work in Taiwan, the provider you pick matters. One detail is often overlooked: some VPNs offer only a virtual Taiwan location — the IP looks Taiwanese, but the server sits in another country, which adds latency. This guide compares seven well-known VPNs by Taiwan servers and cities, prices and renewals, refund terms, devices, technology and real user reviews.

Information checked: October 17, 2026. Server counts, prices and ratings change — confirm on the provider’s site before buying. A VPN does not make you anonymous; follow local law and the terms of the services you use. Some links may be affiliate links; this does not change your price or our assessment.

Quick verdict: best Taiwan VPN

Most Taiwan servers: NordVPN

100+ servers in Taiwan (Taipei), rich features, from $3.49/mo on the 2-year plan.

Best for many devices: Surfshark

82 servers in Taipei, unlimited devices, from $2.49/mo.

Best for privacy: Proton VPN

20 servers in two Taiwanese cities plus Secure Core multi-hop; Swiss, open source.

Free option: Windscribe

Taipei location; Windscribe says it uses no virtual locations. Free up to 10 GB/month, Pro $69/year.

Easiest, but virtual: ExpressVPN

Taiwan is a virtual location — fine if you only need a Taiwanese IP.

Most cities, strict terms: Astrill

Taipei, Taichung, Changhua, Nantou and more — but expensive, no refunds, low ratings.

Mullvad scores highly on privacy, but we found no Taiwan location in its server list, so it is not a first choice when you need a Taiwan IP.

Internet in Taiwan: do you need a VPN?

Freedom House’s Freedom on the Net 2025 rates Taiwan “Free” (79/100). Social media is not blocked and no VPN restrictions are reported. However, more than 50,000 websites were designated for DNS-level blocking in the first half of 2025, mostly without judicial review, and disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks linked to China-based actors continue.

So in Taiwan a VPN is mainly used for:

  • Public Wi-Fi security in cafés, hotels and stations.
  • Privacy from your internet provider.
  • A Taiwan IP abroad for services available only in Taiwan (respect each service’s terms).
  • Preparing for mainland China trips — install a VPN with obfuscation beforehand; see Best VPN for China.

Taiwan IP VPN: physical vs virtual servers

VPN Taiwan servers Cities Server type From* Devices
NordVPN 100+ Taipei Not marked virtual $3.49/mo 10
Surfshark 82 Taipei Not stated $2.49/mo Unlimited
Proton VPN 20 (+2 Secure Core) 2 cities Not marked virtual $3.49/mo 10

Mullvad None — No Taiwan location found €5/mo 5

* Introductory prices from official pricing pages, October 17, 2026. Renewals are usually higher.

Why physical servers matter: with a virtual location, traffic detours through another country. That is fine if you only need a Taiwanese IP, but for gaming, video calls or use inside Taiwan, a physical Taiwan server usually gives lower latency.

How to get a Taiwan IP and use cases

  1. Get a Taiwan IP: open the VPN app, choose Taiwan (or Taipei) and connect. Check your location on an IP-lookup site; if it is wrong, switch to another Taiwan server or clear your browser’s location data.
  2. Inside Taiwan: connect to the nearest server — it does not have to be in Taiwan — and enable the kill switch and auto-connect on public Wi-Fi.
  3. Abroad: choose a provider with physical Taiwan servers (NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, Windscribe) and use WireGuard/NordLynx for lower latency.
  4. Scams: a VPN does not stop phishing; blockers like CleanWeb, Threat Protection or R.O.B.E.R.T. help, but stay careful with links.
  5. Going to mainland China: install and test a VPN with obfuscation before you travel — see Best VPN for China.
